Eight-Ball Pool: a guide for your next round

Start Eight-Ball Pool by looking at the playing area and its controls. Clear your assigned group, then legally pocket the eight. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

Play casual eight-ball with the rules shown here. Called pockets and special tournament break rules are not used.

Something to practise

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Notice the feedback after each input.

The purpose of your moves

Clear your assigned group, then legally pocket the eight. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Start here and follow along

  1. Break the rack.
  2. First legal group pot assigns solids/stripes.
  3. Hit your group first and pocket a ball or contact a rail.
  4. Fouls grant ball in hand.
  5. Play the eight after your group was cleared.

Keyboard and screen controls

Touch to aim/place cue ball; set angle and power; Shoot. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Learn from a sample situation

Pocketing eight before clearing your group loses. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Take a moment to compare.

A common point of confusion

No object-ball contact is a foul. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
